  • Businesses question bidding

    Representatives of three Marion County businesses met with Marion County Commission Monday to express concerns about the bidding process on a recent purchase of a tractor mower. Dale Nuss of Ag Power of Hillsboro, Mike Kleiber of Ag Service of Hillsboro, and Marlin Bartel of Straub International of Marion said their businesses weren’t invited to present bids for a tractor mower. The county purchased one from Prairieland Partners of Marion for $82,917.08.

  • No beds, no options

    “We were wrong and we admit we were wrong.” Those were the words said Monday by a Prairie View representative during a Marion County Commission meeting.

  • How do your taxes stack up?

    With the first half of property taxes due Dec. 22, taxpayers may wonder how much of their taxes go to different taxing entities. Property taxes are measured in mills. A mill is one-tenth of one percent of a property’s assessed value.

  • Sheriff's office has new alcohol tester

    Marion County Sheriff’s Office received one of 200 new breath alcohol testers supplied by Kansas Department of Health and Environment in 2008. The Intoxilyzer 8000 has been in use since May, undersheriff Randy Brazil said. The department previously used an Intoxilyzer 5000.

  • County considers C&D landfill

    Marion County Commission discussed the possibility of obtaining a permit for a construction and demolition landfill Monday. The proposed landfill would be at the Martin Marietta Quarry, owned by Rocky Hett.

  • Marion County Farmers Union chartered 100 years ago

    Several years ago, Lois Weber of Marion found an interesting item at an auction. It was the original charter of a branch of the Farmers Union, established March 1908 in Marion County. Officially known as The Farmers Educational and Co-operative Union of America, the national organization was established in 1902 in Texas. The Kansas union was organized in 1907.

  • Tri-County Telephone offers cable TV to rural areas

    In keeping with its mission to enhance communications for its customers, Tri-County Telephone Association, Inc., of Council Grove, continues to expand its services to rural customers in northern Marion, Dickinson, and Morris counties. The company is in the process of providing digital cable television. To be delivered through underground telephone lines, the service will provide access to hundreds of television channels and can be streamlined to fit the customer’s needs and desires.

  • Selma Pritz

    Selma M. Pritz, 97, of Herington, died Dec. 6, 2008, at Medicalodges of Herington. She was a homemaker.

  • Mauro Medina

    Mauro L. Medina, 86, of Florence, died Dec. 8, 2008, at Lakepoint Nursing Home of Augusta. He was a retired Santa Fe Railroad employee.

  • Bertha Helmer

    Bertha E. Helmer, 94, died Nov. 30, 2008, at Marion Assisted Living Center, Marion. She was an aircraft riveter during World War II. Later she worked at Quality Market, Marion.

    Officers investigated thefts and attempted burglaries. Nov. 16: A theft was reported. Stolen property was recovered and returned to the owner. Criminal damage to property was reported. Radar was run. Suspicious activity was checked. Response was given to a 911 hang-up. EMS received assistance with a call. Marion County Sheriff’s Department received assistance with a traffic stop and an arrest.

  • Back to basics

    As the snow flies and the wind blows this Tuesday morning and we pray the electricity stays on long enough for us to finish production of our newspapers, we’re reminded of the importance of the basics. We know them as food, water, and shelter. However, now they include cell phones, fuel for our vehicles, modems for electronic banking and purchasing, and relying on many other people to maintain our basic needs.

  • Newspapers make connections

    There was an interesting study recently conducted for the National Newspaper Association by the Reynolds Journalism Institute at Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri. The research recently was published in Publisher’s Auxiliary, a highly-respected monthly publication read by most in the newspaper industry.

  • The cost of development

    A new National Biological and Agricultural Defense Facility will be located on the Kansas State University campus. The facility will research ways of protecting citizens and animals from the threat of disease and will study livestock diseases and some of the world’s most dangerous biological threats. The Department of Homeland Defense made the selection for the $451 million facility.

    Carl and Christine Elling of Denton, Texas, announce the birth of their daughter, Victoria Ruth Elling, at 1 a.m. Nov. 11, 2008. She weighed 8 pounds 7.5 ounces and was 20½ inches long.

  • Holt, Jones named to state all-academic team

    Marion High School juniors Louis Holt and Ryan Jones qualified for the state cross country meet this past season. While they found success on the course, they also did so in the classroom.

  • MHS debaters fare well at Salina

    Marion High School debaters won four medals this past week at the Salina Central Debate Tournament. Nic Bronnert and E.J. Obermeyer placed sixth and defeated Lansing, St. Mary’s, and
    two teams from Salina South.
