In a written report presented to Marion City Council Monday, Marion Economic Development Director Doug Kjellin has met with the “new user” of the former Golden Living Center building. The city purchased the facility for $100,000.
Entities may consider electrical generation plant
An electrical generation plant may be in the works for this part of the state. Marion City Administrator David Mayfield told Marion City Council Monday he and public works director Harvey Sanders recently attended a meeting and talked about the possibility.
It's official: County to send trash to Butler County
Marion County Transfer Station Director Rollin Schmidt received signed contracts from Butler County Sanitary Landfill, he told Marion County Commission Monday. The five-year contract with Butler County begins Jan. 1, 2009. The landfill will charge $31.50 per ton for municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris.

Hospital CEO receives award
Jeremy Armstrong, St. Luke Hospital and Living Center Chief Executive Officer, recently received the American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE) Early Career Health Care Executive Regent’s Award at the annual meeting of Kansas Association of Health Care Executives (KAHCE) in Overland Park. The regent’s award recognizes affiliates who have significantly contributed toward the advancement of health care management excellence and the achievement of ACHE goals.

Kenneth Rigler, 77, of Muskogee, Okla., and formerly of Marion, died Dec. 14, 2008. He owned Marion TV and Electric.
Laurine Schafer
Laurine Schafer, 87, died Dec. 12, 2008, at Kansas Christian Home, Newton. She was a federal government clerk.
Evelyn Seibel
Evelyn D. Seibel, 91, died Dec. 13, 2008, at Salem Home, Hillsboro. Born July 22, 1917 at Jetmore, she was the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Ellis) Underhill. She was a homemaker.
Amanda Wedel
Amanda Wedel, 90, Durham, died Dec. 11, 2008, at Moundridge Manor of Moundridge. She was a homemaker.
Glen Williams
Glen C. Williams, 90, Marion, died Dec. 7, 2008 at Salem Nursing Home, Hillsboro. He was a farmer and agricultural construction worker.

Wasn’t that bizarre about a McPherson elementary school being ranked in the first percentile of having poor air quality? The report was conducted by USA Today and the study basically was conducted on paper by measuring the distances of possible pollutants from schools.
They're back
It’s hunting season once again and we’re glad to see the hunters arrive with all their dogs and regalia. While the railroaders kept our bed and breakfast busy in Ramona the first year we were in business, it was the hunters who were our inspiration to even try the venture. Hank’s boys came back regularly for the beginning of hunting season for lots of years and when Hank’s son, Keith, had a boy old enough to join the hunt, he came, too. They’d send us pictures in California of their Kansas hunting trophies, posing with their game bird held high. Or they’d leave trophy feathers at the Ramona House. And then life took over with it’s myriad responsibilities and the family hunters dwindled.

Both Warrior squads finish as runners-up at classic
Two Warrior teams claimed the first Marion Classic championships Saturday at the USD 408 Sports and Aquatics Center. Unfortunately, for Marion High School, it was the Warriors of Berean Academy. Both the Marion boys’ and girls’ teams fell in the final round at the hands of the private school.
Warriors take fourth at Hesston; win first dual at Chase County
It was a better second week of the season than the opener for the Marion High School wrestling team. The Warriors won their first dual of the season Thursday against Chase County, and had team members who placed Saturday at the Hesston tournament.
