New vet clinic is coming to town
After a total of 25 minutes of executive sessions, Marion City Council approved an incentive package Monday evening to Spur Ridge Veterinarian Clinic to relocate from Florence to Batt Industrial Park of Marion. The veterinary clinic is owned by Brandon Kraus and had been located in Florence for several years.
Flu season comes to Kansas
The first verified case of influenza recently was identified in Kansas, according to Kansas Department of Health and Environment. There has not been a confirmed case of influenza yet in Marion County, but it is predicted to be a worse than average flu season. Influenza, which is also called the flu, is a viral respiratory infection. It should not be confused with what many people call the stomach flu, Marion County Health Department Administrator Diedre Serene said. About 36,000 people die from the flu every year in the U.S.
Water rates will increase: Fireworks approved for New Year's Eve celebration
Water rate increases for city residents were approved Monday by Marion City Council and become affective Jan. 1. Water customers will be charged $26 for the first 1,000 gallons and $3.75 per 1,000 gallons after.
Three area soldiers leave for Middle East
It was a send-off that has become all too common. Local American Legion Riders hosted a reception Sunday afternoon for three soldiers as they prepare to go overseas.
Many unanswered questions remain
It wasn’t an easy decision for Marion County Special Education Cooperative to pull up stakes in Florence and move to Marion. However, the five board members who represent the five school districts in the county believed it was the logical decision.
Commission considers zoning rule changes
Marion County Commission discussed proposed planning and zoning rule changes Dec. 22 and requested a planning board member discuss the proposed changes. Planning/zoning and environmental health director Bobbi Strait said the planning board had a public hearing Dec. 8 to propose the changes to the county’s zoning rules.

A good deal
Marion County Special Education Cooperative made a decision Dec. 22 to purchase the former Golden Living Center nursing home in Marion. The City of Marion had purchased it with the “assumption” the cooperative would buy it from them and move the facility from Florence to Marion.
Off the record: Resolved: No more resolutions
The new year is here and most of us have the obligatory New Year’s resolutions. Mine are always to lose weight, be more kind, more organized, more efficient, more of everything.

MHS exchange students finding a home in 'typical America'
Marion, Kansas may not have the bright lights of New York City, the pristine beaches of Florida, or California’s celebrities, but that doesn’t bother five Marion High School foreign exchange students. “Kansas is just the typical America, and I like it,” Niklas Bronnert of Germany said.
