  • City employees receive 3% raise

In a somewhat confusing exchange between Marion City Council and city officials Monday evening, the council decided to approve a three percent pay increase for all full-time city employees. The discussion began when Mayor Mary Olson asked Public Works Director Harvey Sanders if any of his employees complained about not receiving a three percent merit raise. She asked if there was any recourse an employee could take if he or she disagreed with the evaluation. City Administrator David Mayfield said he reviewed all of the completed evaluations and all employees signed them in agreement.

  • Candidates sought for councils, school boards

  • Mayor explains need for closed city council sessions

Managing Editor Susan Berg had an interesting editorial in last week’s Marion County Record regarding the actions of the Marion City Council and the use of executive sessions. She mentioned the strict use of the sessions as well. I am asking her to explain her concern with the length of the sessions. When I ran for this position, one of my issues I campaigned for was to have an open government by listening to the concerns of the residents of Marion, and bring them to the council. This has been a very important issue for me and at times frustrating.

  • Spectators come to aid of fallen basketball official

The night began like any other during basketball season. Ellinwood High School gym was full of fans, band members, players, and coaches — all wanting their team to win.

  • Making waves on financial end

With the USD 408 Sports and Aquatics Center beginning it’s eight month, superintendent Lee Leiker gave a presentation Monday at the board of education meeting of the building’s financial status, indicating revenue was more than projected. Leiker mentioned from the start no one involved with the project expected the pool to make a profit — pools almost never do.

  • 50-50 deal with city

The City of Marion will follow through with its original agreement with USD 408 regarding the sharing of expenses of an indoor swimming pool currently owned and operated by the school district. At Monday’s Marion City Council meeting, City Administrator David Mayfield reminded the council that the previous city commission had approved a 50/50 cost share with the school district of expenses associated with the swimming pool.

OPINION

  • Seize this opportunity

Imagine thousands of visitors in our county for a weekend, looking for ways to spend their money. And imagine that most of these people are from large cities, wanting to have a “rural experience,” complete with a bed and breakfast, arts and crafts, and homemade food.

  • A glimpse of past radio days

When I heard Marion High School alumni were going to present radio plays, I was skeptical of whether it would be very entertaining. I have cable and Internet at home. The only time I ever really listen to radio is during K-State games that aren’t on television, but I decided to give it a chance.
