New undersheriff is no stranger to Marion County
For new Marion County Undersheriff Dave Huntley, he’s returning to a job he had more than 20 years ago. It was 1985 when Huntley was Marion County Undersheriff, at that time working for Sheriff Mike Childs.
Getting closer to recycling
Marion County does not have a countywide recycling program, but that could change in the near future. Commissioners discussed a proposed program Tuesday with Transfer Station Director Rollin Schmidt. A vote on a contract with Sonoco of Hutchinson will likely be at the commission meeting Monday.
Roughing it
Boy Scouts from Hillsboro, Marion, and Peabody gathered during the weekend with about 4,000 other scouts at the annual Trappers’ Rendezvous at Harvey County West Park. Scouts from Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas met to shoot black powder rifles, throw tomahawks, and learn the history of frontier mountain men.
Peanut butter recall affects local retailers
Peanut butter got a bad rap last year at about this time with an outbreak of Salmonella, and it’s happening again. Suppliers of peanut butter used in crackers have sent recall notices to local retailers, advising them to remove and destroy the items from their shelves.

Kris Srajer and her husband, Jim, of Tampa, both grew up in Omaha, Neb. They went to the same high school, were in the same class, and graduated together in 1982. Kris went on to obtain a degree in management information systems from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Can you hear it? Listen closely. It’s in the air. There. Did you hear that? It’s optimism.
Too much government?
Interesting information recently was released from the U.S. Census Bureau ranking Kansas 49th in the nation, which includes the District of Columbia, for the number of government entities compared to the population. Kansas has 2,084 general-purpose governments (cities, townships, and counties) serving 2.7 million residents. That’s an average of 1,332 residents per government, compared to a national average of 7,725. North Dakota and South Dakota have the dubious honors of 50th and 51st out of 51 states/districts.
Random Thoughts
Have you ever wondered how things are made? “How do they do that?” There is a program on TV that really does that. The other night I watched. It was on how candy canes are made by machine. What an interesting show. It was amazing. They started with a big lump of white candy and right before your eyes, the machine formed it into striped, curved canes, each one perfect. Then I began to wonder how the machine was made.
