County seeks stimulus money for city streets
Marion County Commission will pursue money from the federal stimulus package to overlay 190th between Marion and Hillsboro and Cedar Street in Marion. Road and Bridge Superintendent John Summerville said at the commission’s Friday meeting Marion wanted the county to mill and overlay Cedar Street from U.S.-56 to Kellison Street.

Representative Bob Brookens said Saturday that he did not know how he was going to vote regarding the construction of two coal-fired plants near Holcomb until he voted Friday. He voted for it.

J.C. Heyman, 73, of Burns, died Feb. 26, 2009, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado. He was employed for 30 years with Kansas Turnpike Authority.

Times are tough. We all know it. We constantly hear it from the media and we can see it. It seems everyone is cutting back. Employee numbers or hours are being reduced. Some store shelves remain empty when inventory has been sold.
Bless the beasts
The weather this winter hasn’t been as unforgiving to us in Marion County as some years but it still concerns me to see pets outdoors. In any kind of weather, pets need adequate shelter, food, and water.
Random Thoughts
My dear friend, Margaret Wolf, will be 100 years old today (Wednesday). She is about to catch up with me. We spent a lot of time together when we were young. Her daughter and my daughter still are good friends. Happy birthday, Margaret! I have a suggestion for our congressmen. For years, they have been receiving huge salaries and a lot of perks. What if they contributed some of their salaries to the government in this time of need? It would make us admire them and vote for them when the time comes. You know what President Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” I’m probably dreaming.

What a season it was. Marion High School foreign exchange students Emil Schramm, Phillip Gu, Niklas Bronnert, and Mats Mangelrod Johannessen ended their first organized basketball season Friday, and were proud to say they were part of the Warrior squad.

Sloppy second half does in Warriors during sub-state game
For two quarters they were right there. The Marion High School Warriors trailed Hillsboro 31-29 at halftime Tuesday night on the Trojans home court during the first round of sub-state action.
MHS girls out in first round with home loss to Halstead
Alexi Bohling scored 14 points, Marissa Vermillion had 13, and Rebecca Denny grabbed 12 rebounds Monday to lead Halstead High School to a 51-46 first round sub-state upset at Marion. Julia Zeiner and Lindsay Hett each had 13 points for MHS, but the fourth-seeded Warriors managed just two points in the second quarter after leading 14-10 at the end of one.
