  • Special Veterans Day for local soldier

It’s tough when a spouse or children’s father is away. It’s even more tough when he’s serving in a war — a world away. Becca Kimbrel of Marion knows what it’s like to keep a home and care for her children while her husband, 1st Lt. Luke Kimbrel, is serving his country in Iraq.

Nineteen-year-old Gary Thornton had no idea what he was getting into in June 1962 when he signed a form swearing to secrecy about the U.S. government’s involvement in a secret nuclear weapons testing program. The penalty for speaking out was a $20,000 fine or 20 years behind bars. As an enlistee in the U.S. Naval Reserve, he spent two years on a ship in the South Pacific and Far East and had many interesting experiences at various ports along the way.

DOCKET

OPINION

  • Proposed jail: Enough already

There comes a time when it’s appropriate to let go of issues and let the public decide for itself. That was the point I was at this past week. Yes, I suppose I could have filled the newspapers with more information about what had already been said about the proposed new jail and sales tax increase. And, yes, I could have again shared my opinion about the situation but I was to the point then (and still am) where the public has heard and read the proposal presented by Marion County Commission.

  • Central Park: Two sides

I was reminded this past week there are two sides to every issue. I received a call from a rural Marion farmer who sees the park donation and renaming of the park as an opportunity.
