Officers say: Banks are in good condition
With the turmoil the U.S. economy is in, area residents may be concerned about the safety of banks in Marion County, but there is nothing to fear, bank officials say. “We’re still lending money to credit-worthy people,” said Chris Costello, president of Tampa State Bank in Marion and Tampa.
Tillie Hein celebrates 100 years
Otillia “Tillie” Hein of Tampa was thrilled to vote Nov. 4 in the general election, just four days before her 100th birthday. She said she has voted in every election since her 21st birthday in November 1929. The first presidential election she participated in was between Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932.
Weekend filled with theater in Marion County
The stage is set for a weekend packed with comedy, singing, and dancing as all five high schools in Marion County prepare for plays, including four musicals. The busy weekend for theater is because of Kansas State High School Activities Association’s mandatory buffer week between football and basketball seasons.
Marion woman improves health with stomach surgery
About 18 months ago, Bonnie Rindt of Marion began considering stomach-reduction surgery to lose weight and address medical problems. She was taking 13 pills a day, and one medication was causing weight gain. She also was pre-diabetic and needed two knee replacements and a second back surgery.
Holiday home tours offered
Marion City Library will host Christmas Home Tours from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 30. Homes on the tour include Claude and Phyllis Landis, 2230 N. Sunrise Road; Jeannie and Brad Wildin, 524 S. Cedar, Marion; The Outdoors Inn, 25 Jerome, Marion County Lake; and Gerald and Jan Wiens, 407 S. Lincoln, Marion.
Progress on renovations needed before new dock allowed at lake
Marion County Commission heard a request for an exception to a policy prohibiting new dock construction at Marion County Park and Lake at the commission meeting Monday. Robert Smalley bought the cabin in the 1950s and built a dock on the lake soon after, he told the commission. He said he closed the cabin after the Kansas Department of Health and Environment required the cabin be equipped with potable water.

Jack Deason Sr.
Jack Dale Deason Sr., 70, of Aulne, died Oct. 24, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was a baker.

Salt and pepper collection seasons woman's retirement
It might take an hour or two to view every one of the 1,963 sets of salt and pepper shakers Marlene Anduss of Marion has collected. The 72-year-old woman keeps them in three, large, enclosed display cases, two curio cabinets, several smaller cabinets, and on shelves in a special room she and her husband built onto their house at 1015 E. Main St.

MES leadership team on the move
Marion Elementary School sixth graders have a responsibility as role models to the younger students. For the second consecutive year, a group called the MES Leadership Team is taking that to another level.
Scholars' Bowl team opens season
Marion High School Scholars’ Bowl team compiled of sophomores Dane Purkeypile, E.J. Obermeyer, and Patrick Hodson, and freshmen Beth Nesser and Drew Knolla, took first Nov. 6 at Council Grove. Marion went 6-1 during the freshmen/sophomore event.
MHS debaters compete at Halstead
Marion High School debate team had a good day this past week at Halstead. As a team, the Warriors placed third. E.J. Obermeyer and Niklas Bronnert placed second by defeating competitors from Sterling, Buhler, and Nickerson.
Centre FFA members attend national convention
A group of Centre FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 22-25, to attend the National FFA Convention. The Ag Sales team of Amy Hajek, Nellie Hill, Kristine Jirak, and Julie Rziha competed and finished in the silver division among 40 states. They were asked to participate in an objective test as well as an oral sales presentation.
MES honors troops with school ties
Marion Elementary School honored three U.S. soldiers Thursday who have connections to the school. Specialists Bronson Shipman and Jerred Helm of Charlie 161 FA unit, and First Lt. Luke Kimbrell of the 400th Military Police Battalion with Oklahoma National Guard were recognized during the school’s morning assembly.
Third Belton sibling earns American FFA Degree
Gloria Belton, daughter of Ed and Gwenn Belton of Tampa, was awarded the American FFA Degree in October at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The American degree is the highest level that can be achieved in FFA. Less than two percent attain it.

Nine Warriors named all-league
Mid-Central Activities Association post-season teams for 2008 were filled with Marion High School fall athletes. Seven football players and two volleyball athletes found themselves on all-league teams.
