Pilgrimage draws hundreds to Pilsen
With aching feet and tired muscles, a group of 70 walkers arrived Sunday morning at Pilsen, to be joined later by hundreds for a special Mass. The 60-mile walk over a three-day period was to walk in the shoes of Pilsen native and sainthood candidate Father Emil Kapaun.
Donations, pledges near goal
It’s not too late to make a donation or pledge toward the St. Luke Hospital renovation project in Marion. A $6.2 million bond has been obtained for the project with additional money to be used for furnishings.
Newell home finished
American Legion Riders will escort Sgt. Ryan Newell and his family to their new home at 10:40 a.m. June 26. A key presentation and open house, sponsored by Homes for Our Troops and Hett Construction, will be at 11 a.m. June 26 at 1001 Tanglewood Street, Marion.
Local residents get time in limelight
The movie is a “boy meets girl” story but the real story behind the film is the professional film crew coming to Kansas — particularly Marion — to film. The movie, “The Last Days of Shaniko,” is a historical fiction, Western-style movie set in 1945 in Central Oregon. There is a real Shaniko, Ore., but a recent water rights fight kept the crew from filming there.
Signage would honor former governor from Marion
A proposal by Marion Historical Museum to erect new signs on U.S. 56 north of Marion could be one way Marion can contribute to the celebration of the 150th birthdays of Kansas and Marion in 2011. The signs will highlight Marion as the hometown of Edward Wallis Hoch, who was governor of Kansas from 1905 to 1909.
Plane makes emergency landing on U.S. 77
According to Marion County Sheriff Robert Craft, pilot Donald DeWitt, 71, of Norman, Okla., was forced to make an emergency landing in his biplane on U.S. 77 near the K-150 junction near Marion. The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday. Sheriff Deputy Jimmy Philpott arrived at the scene and noticed the small aircraft on the road.
Carr charged with first-degree murder in toddler's death
Late Friday afternoon, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton and County Attorney David Yoder held a press conference to announce that Yoder filed new charges in Harvey County District Court against Chad Carr, 26. First-degree murder charges were added to the two counts of aggravated battery and two counts of child abuse with which Carr was charged shortly after the March 27 death of his girlfriend’s 19-month-old son, Vincent Hill. Carr was home alone with the boy when he died. He had called 911 to report the child was unresponsive and not breathing. He was arrested on the battery and abuse charges a short time later.

He was born Feb. 1, 1960, the son of Eugene&Verna (Jirak)Vinduska Sr. He was a graduate of Centre High School.
John Lindau
John Henry Lindau, 87, of Colorado Springs, Colo., passed away June 7, 2010, at Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs. John was born on Christmas Day, 1922, in Lincolnville, Kansas. In 1947, he married Mary Lee Stewart, who preceded him in death in 1995.
Lorena Seydell
Lorena H. Seydell, 85, of Wichita, passed away June 7, 2010, in Wichita. She was born to Martin and Hannah Krause in Lincolnville. Lorena was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church all of her adult life.
JoAnn Hummel
JoAnn Hummel, 71, of El Dorado, died June 3 at her home. Born July 28, 1938, in Burlington, to Lowrence and Dorothy (Freeman) Heusner, she was a homemaker.
LaMar Miller
The Rev. LaMar Miller, 84, of Crown Point, Ind., died May 30 in Crown Point. Born June 18, 1926, in Hillsboro, to Gus H. and Marie (Ratzlaff) Miller, he was a Lutheran pastor.
Dorothy Smith
Dorothy “Dottie” Smith, 74, of Peabody died June 6. She was born Sept. 20, 1935. Her husband, Arthur Smith, preceded her in death.
Loretta Sroufe
Loretta A. “Minnie” Sroufe, 80, of Garden Plain, died June 6, in Garden Plain. Born Sept. 2, 1929, in Durahm, to Frank P. and Agnes (Hajek) Steiner, she was a retired Tweco machinist, Goddard school cook, and Stepanek Grocery store cashier.

Janzens have 'fallen' for unusual goats
What started eight years ago as a hobby for Steve and Phoebe Janzen has now become the focus of their goat farming operation — and these are no ordinary goats. Originally, they wanted to clear their narrow strip of land, 24.5 acres southwest of Florence, of the serious overgrowth of weeds and brush.
Local FFA chapter receives awards at annual state convention
Members of Marion/Florence FFA Chapter attended the 82nd annual state FFA convention June 2 through 4 in Manhattan. The local chapter received recognition for placing in the gold division — top 10 percent of all chapters — in the community development division. The chapter also placed in the silver division — top 20 percent of all chapters — in the chapter award areas of chapter development and student development.
Klenda, Kaiser receive FFA scholarships
Two area high school students received scholarships from the state and national FFA foundations. Jackie Klenda of Centre High School received a $1,000 Jim Patry Agriculture Education scholarship from the state foundation.
Wheat harvest projections are conservative
Early predictions indicated wheat harvest could have begun this week but Mother Nature had other ideas, dumping nearly two inches of rain Monday and Tuesday in parts of Marion County. According to Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro Grain Coordinator Dick Tippin, on Tuesday, the Marion County wheat harvest should begin early next week.
MHS grad enrolls in milling science program at KSU
Marion High School 2010 graduate Ryan Jones planned to study mechanical engineering at Kansas State University. He had already toured the campus when a friend told him about an interesting alternative — milling science. When Jones looked into milling science, he discovered it has a lot in common with engineering. Both programs use a lot of math and science.
Sunflowers are an alternative in crop rotation
Upon seeing a field the color of sunshine, a family stops along a rural Marion County road to admire and photograph the scene. The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas, and it is the namesake of a Marion County blacktop road, but it is more than that. The sunflower is a plant with several uses.

No candidates file for commission seat
No candidates had filed for Marion County Commission for District 1, currently represented by Bob Hein, as of 1 p.m. Monday. The deadline to file candidacy is noon Thursday. District 1 includes Durham, Hillsboro, and Lehigh.
Barnett: Government involvement is stifling business
The economy, especially job creation, is the most important issue for the United States right now, State Sen. Jim Barnett, R-Emporia, said Tuesday. Barnett, a candidate for Kansas 1st Congressional District, spoke with several residents at the home of Marian Crofoot in Marion as part of his house call tour.
Lincolnville ballfield issues take center stage
After many years under the control of Lincolnville Wide Awake 4-H Club, the concessions stand at the Lincolnville ball diamond will be managed by Lincolnville City Council and specifically by Parks and Recreation Chairman Dawn Kaiser. The stand was built in the early 1970s through a cooperative effort of the city and the 4-H club, at the time, operating under the leadership of Don Buethe, Hulda Lehmann, and RuthAnn Carlson. At the council’s Monday meeting, Mayor Barbara Kaiser read a letter signed by club leader Janet Matz, club president Carrie Carlson, and project leader Deb Casey, giving official notice that the club has relinquished control. They decried the fact that the club was not in on the discussion to terminate its control. Dawn Kaiser told the council the city has been considering the issue for two years. She said contacts and information did not get to the right person. She said she apologized to Casey for the lack of communication.
County gets big sales tax boost
Marion County received $84,056 in sales tax for March sales, an increase of $30,585 from March 2009. The biggest increase was in compensating use tax, which was $40,220. In a typical month, compensating use tax totals about $4,000, Marion County Treasurer Jeannine Bateman told commissioners Monday. Compensating use tax for March 2009 was $5,044.

Jim and Judy Christensen of Marion will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday. Jim Christensen and Judy Cole were married June 12, 1960, at the First Baptist Church in Wichita.
Families attend Hanschu reunion
The Fred and Kate Hanschu reunion was May 29 at Kansas District Lutheran Retreat Center at Herington Lake. Family members attended a potluck dinner, which consisted of some of Kate’s recipes.
Card shower will mark 80th birthday
The family of Vivian Mueller requests a card shower in honor of her 80th birthday June 17. A longtime resident of Canada, Vivian now resides with her husband, Norman, in Hillsboro.

Marion students involved in Discovery Center art project
It was the biggest art project that Marion High School graduate Emily Rogers had ever done. She painted a 4-by-4-foot panel of plywood with brightly colored swirls for her art class at MHS.
One year later: 2009 high school graduates reflect on plans
For some members of the class of 2009, everything is going according to plan. For others, changes in their plans worked out for the better. In June 2009, several high school graduates from Marion County shared their plans. One year later, Viktoria Bichet, Joseph Bryant, Abi Humber, Kayla Nickelson, and Kristin Unruh responded to a request for an update of their post-graduation plans.

Marion swim team eyes another district championship
The Marion Receration League swim team won the Mid-Kansas Swim League last year with a large group of talented swimmers and an experienced coach who consistently drilled swimmers on proper technique. Marion is looking to dominate the league for the second year in a row using the same formula.
