A frosty crowd of more than 150, mostly younger people, were present Sunday at midnight to celebrate New Year’s Eve on the lawn of the Marion County Courthouse. It was the beginning of a new year and a new millennium.

Kansas Attorney General Carla Stovall took the state by surprise this week with the announcement that she will not seek re-election.

County Commissioner Linda Peterson will be honored Jan. 5 with a farewell reception for her years of service to Marion County. The public is invited.

Art Jantz of Hillsboro is hanging up his apron after 54 years in the meat cutting business in both Marion and Hillsboro.

The list of “Beary Special Babies” born this month at St. Luke Hospital include Donavan Dean Hokanson, Dec. 4; Skye Nicole Rivera, Dec. 8; Eli Jacob Hett, Dec 11; and Brianna Paige Kline, Dec. 26.

Jim and Marilyn Koslowsky and their family returned this week to Nairobi, Kenya, after a six-month furlough in the United States. They will be spending a three-year term under the auspices of Campus Crusade for Christ. Jim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Koslowsky, Marion, is business manager at the Nairobi International School of Theology. His wife, Marilyn, conducts classes for pastors’ wives.

Foreign exchange students are seeking host families for the 2001-02 academic year. Families interested in hosting a student should contact the local high school for further information.
