Jim Lehrer, host of “The Newshour with Jim Lehrer” and a former Marion resident, returns this weekend to Kansas. Lehrer will speak Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina. He will be introduced by Mary Exline, a former classmate at a Marion school and daughter of Norma and the late Roger Hannaford of Marion.

Many people will be coming to Kansas this week to attend the Kansas Motocross Championships to be held at Green Acres track on North Walnut Street, Marion.

After 18 years as Marion County agent for Kansas State University Research and Extension, Steve Tonn is stepping down. He has accepted a job with the University of Nebraska Extension Service and will be active in water quality projects for the city of Omaha.

Andrew Hajek, Brianne Stahlecker, and Jill Fenske, students at Centre High School, each received check for $200 from the Kansas Sheriff’s Association for their winning essays on the subject of violence in schools.

John and Marianne Siebert will host the “Diamonds in the Rough” competitive trial ride Friday through Sunday at X-Diamond Ranch, rural Florence. Sixty riders from throughout the Midwest will compete in the event. Property owners participating include Ray and Eleanor Davidson, several branches of the McLinden family, Jackie Hett, Steve Hett, Blair and Nancy Tharp, Chuck and Cathy DeForest, and Dale and Kelly Peterson.
