Class of 2001 graduate Ashley DeForest received several honors Sunday at the Marion High School graduation exercises. She was named valedictorian, outstanding senior girl, and received an academic honor award. Sarah Versch was selected as salutatorian and Blake Conyers was named outstanding senior boy.

Marion and Rachel Toland, residents at the Marion County Lake, purchased a 6.3-acre tract of land in September and presently are taking care of three lamas, three sheep, five goats, three donkeys, one rabbit, one pot-bellied pig, two turkeys, four ducks, two geese, 20 chickens, one cat, and two miniature horses on the acreage.

Volunteers are needed to help raise and lower 110 flags at Marion Cemetery for Memorial Day.

Kathy Ehrlich is pictured accepting the 2001 Friend of Education award from Marion Elementary School Principal Terry Slattery. Ehrlich was honored in particular for her work with projects that benefit the library and with the homework assistance program. Also nominated was Cathy Whitaker for her work in classrooms and on field trips.

Chingawassa Days is just about a week away. It promises to be the “best one yet” to borrow a phrase from another Marion celebration. There will be many activities, numerous bands, and the Three Dog Night concert, featuring one of the biggest bands of the ’60s and ’70s.
