Despite a rainy start Friday afternoon, this year’s Chingawassa Days was a success, attracting more people than ever. The sunny weather on Saturday and the performance by Three Dog Night brought more than 3,000 people to Marion’s Central Park over the weekend.

The bronze statue dedicated to Father Emil Kapaun, who died during the Korean War, was dedicated Sunday in Pilsen. The statue of Kapaun helping a wounded soldier was unveiled by Eugene Kapaun, the priest’s brother.

The “Beary Special Babies” born at St. Luke Hospital during the month of May were Corrina Mae Crabb, May 1; Lillian Louise Collett, May 11; Olivia Ann Bowers, May 15; and Ethan Alexander Hinton, May 27.

Marion Kiwanis Club honored Marion High School athletes May 22 at the annual athletic banquet. Ashley DeForest and Jamey Cooper were named outstanding senior athletes. Jess Whiteman and Tiffany Tajchman received inspirational athlete awards. Sarah Versch and Blake Conyers were selected for senior athletic leadership.

Ashley Loomis, daughter of Larry and Randee Loomis of Marion, was one of 50 members of the graduating class Sunday from the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. She will begin a residency in pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin Hospital/Clinic in Madison.
