The corn is as high as an elephant’s eye, but it’s a dry-eyed elephant this year in Marion County. Standing more than 7-feet tall in a field alongside Sunflower Road, south of Marion, was lush and vibrant-green last week. But additional days of 100+ degrees has transformed the former pretty picture into a sad one of brown drought. Ears are “made” but the corn is shriveling.

Charles and Virginia Heerey attended a Heerey family reunion July 13 through 16 at Estes Park, Colo.

Construction on K-150 will probably begin before Labor Day. Workers will widen the shoulders of the 17-mile road. They also will flatten the hills and valleys on the Chase County side of the road.

A group of Australian ranchers visited Harms Plainview Ranch southeast of Lincolnville July 17. The Angus breeders were on a tour of several American ranches.

Rob Hartley of Marion is converting part of the former Ford dealership along U.S. 56 into a car and truck wash. The building will contain a self-wash bay and a touch less bay.
