Marion-Florence REC officials canceled open gym activities after vandals set off a fire extinguisher in Marion High School gym.

Jim and Kaye Darrow of Marion announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Traci Kristen, to Lawrence Eugene Lanning of Hillsboro. The wedding is planned for Aug. 7 at Marion Presbyterian Church.

Marion Manor hosted its annual Fourth of July barbecue Saturday for residents, employees, and guests. Administrator Ken Vinduska flipped hamburgers and grilled hot dogs outside, while Bennie Holtsclaw of Cedar Point entertained inside.

Jane Rziha of Tampa, a senior at Centre High School leaves July 18 for Germany. She received a government-sponsored youth exchange scholarship to spend a year with a host family while attending school in Germany.

The “Butterfield Stageline” spent Friday night in Marion. John Hogoboom, 89, and a small group of family and friends spent this past week on horseback and in the homemade stagecoach crossing Kansas from north to south. Hogoboom crossed Kansas from east to west in 1976. The group camped on the Tom Thomas farm east of Marion Friday night.
