Forrest Kelsey was the grand prize winner of Hoch Publishing Company’s Christmas on Us promotion. He received $1,000 in gift certificates. Troy Schmidt was the second place winner, receiving $250 in certificates. The certificates were presented to them at the drawing held Saturday morning at Marion City Building.

Students at Marion Elementary School participated this week in the National Geographic Society’s geography bee. The champions, one from MES and one from MMS, will take a written qualifying test Jan. 11. The top 100 scores advance to the state bee to be held April 5 in Topeka.

The New Year’s Eve ball drop and lighting will take place Monday at Marion County Courthouse.

Leah Arnhold, a 1998 graduate of Marion High School, is one of this year’s squad of 15 cheerleaders at athletic games at the University of Kansas.

A barn located in rural Marion is featured in the 2002 KANSAS! calendar. Noted photographer Gerald Wiens shot the photo of a silent, snow covered farm west of Marion. The barn is owned by Bruce and Belinda Skiles.

Mitchell Enos and Ashlee Moore, both juniors at Marion High School, have been chosen as MHS students of the month. Mitch is the son of Daryl and Pat Enos. Ashlee’s parents are Pat and Jandee Moore.
