Two Union Pacific locomotives with horns blasting come into Marion at 7:51 a.m. Friday, carrying a cauldron with the Olympic flame. A few patient people showed up to see the flame, which was clearly visible. Many scattered coins on the tracks as souvenirs.

It was announced at the monthly meeting of VFW Auxiliary to Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer Post 6958 that Andrew Brookens, winner of the local Voice of Democracy essay contest, placed third in district competition.

Marion High School yearbook has received a second-place honor from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association. Members of the yearbook staff were Sarah Versch, editor and Jamie Bernhardt, Krystal Williams, Amy Waner, Kayla Barrett, Shawna Hett, Alicia Pippin, Sara Davidson, Christina McCarty, and Tiffany Tajchman.

Shane Holub of Marion and Troy Dawson of Cedar Point have pooled resources to purchase Becker Tire Co. in Marion. The business will be known at Marion Tire Co.

Drought conditions and unusually mild temperatures have led some people to continue irrigating lawns in January. According to the Corps of Engineers at Marion Reservoir, the last significant rainfall, .86, occurred Oct. 5.
