At the untimely death of Phyllis Melton on April 25, the people lost a much-admired person and the unofficial historian of the community. If Phyllis were able to give some advice, it would be to live on and do right. Be kind, gentle, serve others, and put your assets back into the community.

James R. Hefley was elected president of Marion National Bank at the board of directors meeting on April 24. He will assume his duties in July.

Paul and Edna Backhus of Tampa celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary April 26 at a social and dinner for family and friends.

Mick and Marge Summervill announce the engagement of their daughter, Kay Lynn, to Nathan Allen Mead, both of Manhattan. The couple will be married June 7 at the home of the bride’s parents.

Students of Anita Hancock presented a recital Sunday at Marion City Auditorium. Participants were Mitchell Leppke, Kara Druse, Megan Overton, Lexie Kruse, Chelsea Voth, Annie Whitaker, MaDonna Schafers, Nicole Nelson, Ben Leppke, Isaac Guetersloh, Robin Davies, Kala Williams, Jamie Williams, Melissa Carlson, and Sarah Guetersloh.

Emily Svoboda and Misti Richmond are local and district winners of the VFW Voice of Democracy Patriot Pen contest.
