Army Specialist Molly Holub, daughter of County Commissioner Dan Holub, was injured very seriously this week as the Hummer she and other Army personnel were traveling in on a road north of Baghdad. An explosive device was detonated near their vehicle and shrapnel hit Mollie’s helmet, face, and neck. She was flown to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., and will undergo surgery there today.

Marion High School staff has selected seniors Danielle Cope and Jason Hett as September students of the month. Danielle is the daughter of Clint and Sarah Cope of Florence. Jason’s parents are Gary and Joella Hett of Marion.

Residents of Tampa have received notice that their post office will officially be closed Nov. 1. The Tampa name and zip code will be continued which, according to the postal service, will help to preserve community identity.

Kindergartners at Marion Elementary School were only infants the day of the Sept. 11 tragedy, but teachers Lana Fahey and Katie Rahe used Monday’s five-year anniversary as an opportunity to teach the students about freedom and what it means to be an American.

Winners of the 2006 Florence Labor Day mutton bustin’ contest were Cody Shipman, first; McKenzee Remmers, second; and Ian King, third.
