“Volunteers: The Backbone of Our Community” is this year’s theme for the 96th annual Old Settlers’ Day parade. Weekend activities begin Sept. 28.

The little limestone building west of the office at Marion County Park and Lake originally housed a laundry/dry cleaning business established and operated by CCC enrollees in 1938 and 1939. It recently was refurbished by volunteer lake residents and will open Sept. 30 as Marion County Park and Lake Museum.

Marion won the eighth annual Bruce-Crofoot golf tournament played Sept. 8-9, that pits members of Marion Country Club and Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course players against each other. Marion now leads the series 5-3.

Five generations posed recently for a family photo. They are great-grandmother Ramona Beisel, grandfather Alan Beisel, mom Chevon (Beisel) Doll holding baby Emily Lauren Doll, and great-great-grandmother Frances Stuchlik.

The Marion High School cross-country team will play host Thursday to the annual Marion meet at Marion County Park and Lake. Varsity returnees who will lead the Warriors are Tacy Taylor, Louis Holt, Ryan Jones, Camille Christensen, Jaclyn DeForest and Brooke Johnson.
