Bids are in and it’s official — a new jail facility is a better investment than renovating and adding to the existing jail. The approximate cost of a new 78-bed jail facility and office space the sheriff’s department and dispatch at Marion’s industrial park is $7.5 million.

Marion VFW Post 6958 and its Women’s Auxiliary have announced winners in the annual Patriot’s Pen essay contest. First place winners were Gwendolyn Olivia Young, eighth grade, and Monica Spachek, seventh grade. Both received $100 U.S. Savings Bonds. Second place winners were Jessie Taylor, eighth grade; and Dylan Goebel, seventh grade. They received $50 U.S. Savings Bonds.

Marion-Florence USD 408’s new performing arts center is scheduled to be completed Dec. 10.

The Sugar Plum Christmas parade will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday on Main Street from Walnut to Fifth streets. Following the parade, Santa will be at his house until 4 p.m. A pet parade will take place at Liberty Park, there will be a drawing for the fund-raiser quilt and baby afghan, and the first drawing for $100 will be held. The event is sponsored by Marion Chamber of Commerce.
