The retail sales committee of Marion Chamber of Commerce will sponsor “Friday Night Fever” in Marion from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11. Participating businesses will have special shopping promotions. Marion City Library will show a movie at dusk.

Marion County residents are invited to a welcome home reception for Ryan Newell, husband of Carrie (Wunderlick) Newell of Marion, from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Marion VFW Post 6958.

Pictured is Megan Schmidt, a 2008 graduate of Marion High School, who recently cut her hair to donate it to Locks of Love that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Lawrence and Traci Lanning and family will welcome Emil Schramm of Munich, Germany, who will arrive in August and attend Marion High School for the coming school year. Mike and Joyce Eurit and family will welcome Mats Johannessen of Larvik, Norway, who also will arrive in August and attend MHS for the coming year.

Centre High School is 50 years old and has undergone several expansions since it was built in 1958. Pictures in this issue show the 1993 addition of a second gymnasium, classrooms, library for fifth and sixth grades, and an ITV room, a 1998 addition of music and special education rooms, and the 1992 addition of a machine shop and greenhouse.
