In what may have been a giant step, the City of Marion Commission voted Monday to proceed toward construction of a power generating plant. Several options are possible: 1.) Construct a plant in cooperation with Hillsboro to provide full service. 2.) Construct a plant in cooperation with Hillsboro to provide only “peak shaving” service. 3.) Construction of a plant, whether or not Hillsboro joins in the proposal, to provide with “peak shaving” or full service.

Erica Mae Hendricks is the first baby born in 1999 at St. Luke Hospital. She was born at 8:21 a.m. Jan. 10.

Fire devastated the home of Ken and Margie Nienstedt Saturday evening in the Youngtown community. Marion fire chief Merle Bruner said the fire started in electrical wiring near the front entrance.

Flint Hills Clayworks in Marion is busy this time of year filling orders for clay to school and university art programs. Orders range from 500 to 5,000 pounds each. The company produces specialty clays for artists as well.

The Marion community was shocked Sunday by the unexpected death of Charles Junior Bredemeier, 74, retired superintendent of utilities for the City of Marion.

People, who enjoy conversing in Low German (Plautdietsch), or learning more about the language and culture, are invited to a public meeting Jan. 21 at Kidron Bethel Village, North Newton.

The Rev. Bradley K. Hanson was officially installed Sunday as pastor for the Marion Presbyterian Church.
