A covered wagon train commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1849 California gold rush will stop April 13 at Lincolnville. The caravan will start near Atchison April 3 and end six months and more than 2,000 miles later at Sacramento, Calif.
Marion police officers are wearing body armor now, courtesy of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Chief David Mayfield showed city commissioners a vest made of ballistic fabric Monday at their regular weekly meeting. Each full- and part-time officer received an armored vest this past week.
Scouts Hank Collett and Chase Williams are pictured checking their pinewood racers one more time before volunteer Stan Williams lets them go Sunday during Pack 102’s Pinewood Derby. Neither long trip nor long hours stopped Marion High School debaters James Meier and Ashley DeForest from earning a trophy Jan. 22-23 at the Class 3-2-1A debate tournament. “This is the best we’ve done since the 1970s when you had debaters like Carla Stovall and Jo Helmer,” said Mary Griffith, MHS debate coach.
