The City of Marion has received approval from the Kansas Department of Transportation to establish a truck route. The designated truck route is for commercial traffic to use K-256 through Marion from either U.S.-56 on the north or U.S.-77 on the east. Purpose of the route is to avoid heavy commercial traffic on residential streets, including Eisenhower Drive, Cedar, and Roosevelt.

The residents of Elmdale have felt relatively secure from floods since a dike was constructed around the town in the 1970s. However, the rains that fell on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 provided to be too much. Water overflowed the dike and, in less than one hour, homes and businesses were flooded, catching most of the residents of the community by surprise.

Kansas Attorney General Carla Stovall gave the keynote address at the annual countywide women’s wellness workshop held Saturday in Marion.

Carol Wiebe of Hillsboro was re-elected chairman of the Marion County Republican Central Committee at the re-organizational meeting held Thursday in Hillsboro.

Larry Lalouette, Florence, has received a 35-year service award from the National Weather Service. He is part of a network of 11,000 observers across the nation.

Douglas D. “Tod” Porter, 69, mayor of Peabody and former postmaster, died Nov. 13. He was a lifelong resident of the community.
