Fine Rains

This county has had two fine rains the past week and everyone is happy. An inch and a half of water fell here Saturday night and nearly an inch Tuesday night. The corn is looking fine and is generally clean, as the farmers have had fine chance to keep it worked. And, there will be a lot of wheat and oats. Generally, the county is in good shape and when compared to many places farther south is in high luck.

Boy Scout Movement

It has been proposed that a troop of Boy Scouts be organized here in Marion. Boys from the age of twelve to eighteen years of age are eligible to membership. Any boy wishing to join the troop may make written application to Dr. Eye. A meeting of all applicants for the purpose of organization will be held Tuesday evening June 6.

The ice cream factory is one of Marion’s growing institutions and one which our people take pleasure in mentioning along with the other good things our town has to her credit. The quality of ice cream put out by Fox & Wolf is fully up to that of any that has ever been shipped here. They use only the purest and best materials obtainable and have the best machinery made hence it is not surprising that their business is increasing rapidly. Shipments are now being made to several nearby points and nearly all the local dealers are supplied by this firm.

The Presbyterian ladies will give an ice cream social in the Park on Friday evening, June 9th.

There was quite a little excitement on the street on Monday caused by a fistic mix-up between John Faust and Buff Jones. The encounter took place in Kieferle and Williams store and both participants were badly battered up. They were arraigned before Police Judge John Gilbert and Mr. Jones let off with a fine of one dollar and costs—amounting to eight dollars and a half in all. John Faust was fined twenty dollars and costs and then because of remarks made in the courtroom was fined ten dollars and costs for contempt of court—making a total fine for him of forty-five dollars.

Governor Hoch delivered the Commencement Address at Sabetha last Friday evening.

Reports from Oklahoma are that the crops will be almost an entire failure on account of dry weather. In McAlister it is said that the people are buying water and paying ten cents a gallon for drinking purposes—water brought from springs—and thirty cents a barrel for water not fit for drinking. A man from Weatherford says that the oats are so dry that they would burn like dry grass.

Dr. W.C. Hereford is the owner of a new Buick car.

Several young people gathered at the home of I.W. Duncans last Thursday evening to help celebrate Miss Clara’s seventeenth birthday. At a late hour, refreshments were served. All report a good time and departed wishing Clara many more happy birthdays.
