The Council has passed an ordinance providing for a special election on the question of the Commission Form of Government. The date has not yet been fixed, but it will probably be about four or five weeks from now.

Fifty Years Ago

On the 15th of June 1860—just fifty years ago the 15th of the coming June—the first party of settlers camped on the site where Marion now stands. They made camp near the present site of Central park—on the south side of Muddy—near the stone house where Mr. Western Martin now lives.

The Record makes a suggestion—why not hold a semi-centennial celebration in honor of those early settlers and commemorative of the pioneer times and as a marker for the progress that has taken place since then?

And also, would it not be a very appropriate thing to have this celebration make the occasion of making some substantial improvements in Central Park? It was there that the settlers camped, and it would be a fine thing to celebrate the event by putting in some long-needed permanent improvements in that beautiful park. The park is one of the town’s real assets, and it has been neglected.

But, at any rate, let us have the celebration and make it an event fittingly commemorating the events of those early days. What a debt we owe to the pioneers—to the men and women who braved the hardships of life in a new, undeveloped, and unsettled country in order to establish homes and lay the foundation of a state and a civilization!

Let the story of those early days be told at this celebration and the papers that are read become a permanent part of the recorded history of the county.

The district court docket for the term beginning Monday, February 7, shows five criminal cases and sixty-one civil cases. Of the latter, ten are petitions for citizenship. No criminal cases of any great notoriety are on the docket.

Misses Fernie and Dorothy Pollitt returned Friday from a two weeks’ visit with their aunt, Mrs. George Noce at Emporia.

B.B. Reimer and Mrs. Runyan have traded places and the Reimer family will move to “Sunset Lodge” about February 1. The Runyans will move to the house now occupied by Chas. Bryan at the north end of Elm street. The Reimer property will be put on the market.

Vic Pratt has been unanimously re-elected as courthouse janitor by the county commissioners. He has been faithful and efficient in doing the work required—and if you know anything about it, you know there is a whole lot to do—and his reelection was well merited.
