Great Auto Trip

A few days ago, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Scheutz made a trip to Kansas City and return in their Buick that was undoubtedly one of the most remarkable auto trips ever made in this part of the country.

They started at noon on Sunday and at 5:35 were at St Marys. They stopped overnight there with relatives and resumed their trip the next morning at 7 o’clock and at 11 o’clock were in Kansas City. Their speedometer registered 200 miles. They were nine hours and thirty-five minutes on the road.

They returned the following day and made the return trip in exactly eight hours—an average of twenty-five miles an hour.

Mrs. Scheutz drove the car on the return trip from Kansas City to Lawrence.

The only mishap of any kind was a tire blow out at Eudora, where they had stopped for dinner. A new tire was put on at K.C. and was in some way improperly fixed at the garage where the work was done. While Mr. and Mrs. Scheutz were at dinner, they heard a loud report and when they came out of the hotel, the people had run out in the street to see what the matter was.

Eudora is the town of Earl Bullock fame and Scheutz is inclined to think the people thought that the report was the discharge of some bandit’s gun—they are a little nervous it seems.

The trouble was quickly overcome and that was the only thing that delayed them a minute either going or coming, and the car was in ship-shape when they got home.

Elgin Changes Hands

Mrs. Lida A. Wheelock has sold the Elgin Hotel furniture to Mr. M.W. Sullivan of Wichita and rented the building to him and she and her daughter, Mrs. Immer, will retire from the hotel management. Mr. Sullivan has taken charge and says he will conduct a first-class hostelry. He has had considerable experience in the hotel business. Mrs. Wheelock and Mrs. Immer expect to leave next week on a pleasure trip.

Charley Wheeler has decided to put up a fine building on his lots west of the YMCA building. That block is going to be one of the finest on Main street. With the new Wheeler building, there will be only one vacant lot in that block—Dr. C.C. Jones’ lot just east of the new Masonic building and he is seriously considering building and completing the block.

One old settler calls to question one statement made last week with reference to the old Costello building. It was stated that a stone wall was erected around the building at the time of the last Indian scare. He says that the stone wall was erected around the old court house. The man from whom we got the information stands pat and says that there was a wall put up around both of the buildings.

The new Thompson building on Third street is progressing nicely. It is a cement block structure, with a front of brick. The same brick will be used that is being used in the new Masonic building—a dark red paving brick, laid with a wide joint of red mortar.
