Important Meeting

There will be a citizens’ meeting at the courthouse tomorrow, Friday evening, for the purpose of making plans preparatory to the big log-rolling which the Woodmen are to hold here the middle of June, and to the Chautauqua which is to be held in August. The specific thing considered is the improvement of the park, the putting in of a bridge and such other things as may be necessary. This is a thing that must be done at once and it is a thing that every public-spirited citizen is interested in. A special invitation is given to the members of the different Ladies Clubs which have contributed to the park improvement fund. Don’t depend on someone else to do these things. Be there and do your part as a citizen of the town.

The ladies of the Baptist church gave a “hen party” at the home of Mrs. George Loveless on Tuesday afternoon, a large number of the ladies of the town and vicinity being invited. Each lady was asked to bring a “live hen” and 40 or 50 hens were received. All the hens were weighed and a prize awarded to the lady whose hen weighed the most. Mrs. Fred Williams won the prize, which was a Marion souvenir spoon. Her hen weighed over eight pounds. A guessing contest was held—the ladies being asked to cut animals from paper, and the winner being the lady who made the most correct guesses as to what animals these paper figures were supposed to be. Miss Nanie Hannaford was the successful one and received a “Chanticleer” brooch as a prize. Elegant refreshments were served.

The courthouse lawn is attracting lots of attention this spring. Of course, you have noticed that it is one of the best in the county. Custodian Pratt is mighty proud of the lawn and is keeping it in first class shape.

Any one desiring instructions in bicycle riding call on Mr. Alex Vogel, 1012 Broadway, Strassburg, Kans.

The big engines for the Power Plant have arrived. Things are moving right along. The water tower will soon be completed and fine progress is being made on the sewer. Cheer up.

Miss Carrie Miller will open a photograph gallery in the second floor rooms of the new Thompson building opposite the courthouse.

Mrs. W.H. Wheelock, Mrs. Coen, and Willie Immer arrived from Bloomington, Illinois, on Thursday and Mrs. Wheelock has again assumed the management of the Elgin Hotel. Mrs. Immer is in a hospital at Bloomington and is expected home in about three weeks.

City Clerk Schlingloff took the septic tank bonds to Topeka last week for registry and then they were promptly sold to the Marion National Bank at par.
