Paving Progress

Work on the street paving is going right along and the prospects are good for an early finishing of the work. About half the curb and gutter has been laid and work on plowing up the street will begin in a day or so. An engine and a “rooter” will be used to tear up the old macadam on Main Street. The work will proceed rapidly when the laying of the concrete base is begun. The sand, brick and asphalt filler work will follow along close behind the concrete work. The first block that will be laid will be the one between Walnut and First streets.

The time has arrived for starting the Biggest Ear of Corn Contest. The biggest ear we have seen was brought in this morning by Thomas Dickerson. It weighs three pounds.

Topeka papers carried the announcement this week of the death of W.C.N. Garvey, Santa Fe freight agent at Topeka. Mr. Garvey was the first agent of the Santa Fe at Marion.

The city commissioners have decided they will not grant any more billiard and poolroom licenses to anyone. There is only one now in force and the board has announced when it expires the first of next January it will not be renewed.

Jensen’s have sent a 59-pound watermelon to the Record office. It will be cut sometime this evening. Don’t tell anyone, please.
