The Old Settlers had a great time last Thursday. The weather was fine in every way except that along about noon there were a number of threatening clouds which caused a good many to leave for home before the afternoon program. The meeting in the park was opened by T.M. Potter of Peabody, President of the Association.

The first speaker was Taylor Riddle, who told a story about a buffalo hunt near what now is Kingman.

The next speaker was Judge Dennis Madden of Emporia. He told of boyhood experiences on the Doyle.

Mrs. Crisfeld of Peabody spoke of the pioneers and of the debt we owe to them.

Judge Frank Doster delivered an address full of interesting references to the conditions of life and society in the early day.

E.W. Hoch spoke briefly, telling a few anecdotes of his early experiences.

Geo. Morgan of Peabody told the story of the county seat fight.

Splendid music was rendered by the Bosh and the Svitak Bohemian Bands and by the Marion Band.

A lot of folks helped to make the event a success, but the real man behind the gun was A.E. Case. He spent time and money and energy on this thing and his unflagging interest added effectiveness to the cause. The Old Settlers’ Picnic has become a regular institution — one of the fine fixed events on the Marion County calendar.
