Soldiers to be Here

Four or five hundred U.S. Cavalrymen will be here on Sept. 20 and camp for part of a day. They are from Fort Riley and are on one of the annual trips. They will probably camp in the east part of town. D.D. McIntosh received official word of their coming and was asked to put them in connection with parties to supply feed and provide ground for camping. The post-office department assists the War department in such matters and postmasters are required to help make arrangements for taking care of the government troops when on these trips.

Mr. and Mrs. John Gardner and little daughter went to Tampa the latter part of last week in their auto. When about a mile from Mr. Gardner’s father’s place, they ran into a ditch and broke the axle of one of the front wheels. Otherwise, no damage was done to the machine and none of the occupants was hurt.

The council has ordered a walk put in from the corner of the Dr. Hannaford place, north to connect with Al Richardson’s walk. It has also ordered a crossing south from W.P. Morris’ place to connect with this walk.

New Paving Proposition

At the council meeting Tuesday evening another Third street paving resolution was passed. It is the same as the former one except that it leaves out the block from Main street to the Elgin Hotel. It calls for paving from the Santa Fe tracks north to the north line of Main street. Notice will now be published again and unless a majority of property owners affect protest, the council will have power to order the paving put in.

The petition asking that Main street be plowed up and new macadam be put down and setting forth the specifications for laying the macadam was turned down.

The council has contracted with J.W. Mavity to do the engineering work necessary in supervising the construction of the remaining sewer. He is to receive $150 a month and reserves the right to do work elsewhere when it will not interfere with his supervision of the sewer. He is also to receive fifty cents an hour for any other work done for the city in addition to the sewer work.

J.C. Watson has filed suit for damages in the District Court against Jerry Forney, claiming damages to the amount of two hundred dollars. The suit is over some controversy in connection with the ice business.

Mr. Robert Robbins wishes all parties to take notice that further trespassing on his place cannot be permitted. He lives in the east edge of town on the place known as the Rawlins place.

Elmer Healea is putting up a two-story addition in the rear of his business property on the south side of Main.

Charley Brooker and Ross Sheets went to McPherson on Tuesday to play with the Hillsboro band at the Fair.

Monday was Labor Day, and the way you found it out was by finding the P.O. and the court-house closed.

The Epworth League of Marion sent several bushel of potatoes to Fisk Training School at Kansas City last week, that being one of the Methodist institutions to which they make some offering of support each year.
