A Runaway

Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Ratzlaff, their month old child, Mrs. John Bitner and Mrs. Samuel Harrison took a drive in the country Sunday and on the way out of town the horses became frightened and were nervous all during the drive.

Mrs. Samuel Harrison remained in the country.

On the way back to town, the horses again became frightened and Mr. Ratzlaff used all his strength to hold them. He braced himself against the dash board which gave away and he was dragged out of the buggy behind the horses.

The other occupants either fell or jumped out and the baby was found in a furrow of the listed field over which the horses were running. The baby’s face was covered with dirt but seemed entirely unhurt. None of the party was hurt except for bruises, a severe shaking up and nerve shock.

After the horses got loose from Mr. Ratzlaff they ran into town and up the hill as far as Ekeler’s place where they were stopped.

The tongue of the buggy was broken.

Band reunion

The band boys from here expect to attend the Band Reunion at Hillsboro next Tuesday. There will be twelve bands from different towns this part of the state. The boys are anticipating a high time and we are confident that they will make a fine showing for our town

A recent count shows that there are sixteen new houses under construction now and a number more being planned which will be expected here this summer.

Mr. Apel went to Lawrence this week to attend the graduating exercises of the university. His daughter, Miss Lizzie, who received most of her schooling in Europe, is one of the graduates.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Thorp and family started on a western trip yesterday. They expect to be gone about three months visiting in Colorado, California, and Washington. They will take an ocean trip off the coast of California and Washington and will attend the Exposition. Mr. Thorp went first to Alva, Okla., for a short visit and will join his family in Colorado. During their absence, Mr. and Mrs. Bauer will occupy the Thorp residence until their own house is completed.

What is the name of the street on which you live? If you don’t know, ask till you find out. There are more than two white houses west of the High school and more than two gray ones east of it. That method of giving directions has long since gone out of date for Marion. Our streets are all named and it is time for us to learn them if we are not already informed.

The “swat the fly” season is on. The once innocent six legger is condemned to death. He is now known as the deadly germ carrying the pest. The summer slogan is “swat the fly.” Send him on the long road by which the chinch bug has gone.

H.A. Billings, one of Marion’s oldest residents, father of ex-Representative O.C. Billings, died recently at the age of 81. Mr. Billings died on the 60th anniversary of his marriage.

Washington, D.C.—To bring the coffin containing the body of William Penn which now reposes in a practically abandoned cemetery in Buckinghamshire, England, to this county and have it interred on the banks of the Delaware river is the object of a movement just launched in congress.

Lots of talk now-days about goods being high priced—have you seen Loveless’ ad?

$1.00 spent for Loveless’ Saturday Special will feed your family almost a week.

Their grocery special for Saturday is as follows:

“The following canned goods all for $1.00: One can each of peaches, beets, apricots, pumpkins, blackberries, grapes, kidney beans, pie peaches, tomatoes and salmon—10 cans for $1.00.” Now what do you think of that?
