Women’s Club Convention

The sessions of the Federation of Women’s Clubs, which met in Marion last Thursday, Friday and Saturday were all that could be desired.

The Business Men’s Club met the visitors at the trains with carriages and the ideal weather conditions made the drive about the city a great pleasure. After this was over, they were taken to the Elgin hotel where they were entertained.

The reception Thursday evening at the beautiful and commodious home of Mr. and Mrs. W.H.Carpenter was a feature of the session.

Notice

Parties subscribing to the church fund at Youngtown at dedication please take notice that same is due. Please pay to T.G. Scott, Route 7, Marion.

Elections returns show a complete Republican victory. Both the state and national tickets have big pluralities. Complete returns in the state are not all in, but 80 out of 105 counties gave Taft a 29,000+ majority over Bryan.

A Halloween party was given Saturday evening at Elk by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Collett in honor of their twelfth wedding anniversary. The house was well adorned for the occasion. By the front door on the outside stood two large jack-o-lanterns. In the bay window, in which sat a large pot of ferns, was hung lighted Japanese lanterns. Over one of the inside doors was suspended a black cat. All persons passing under this had to whistle or bad luck attended them. Miss Ethel and Mrs. Herb Phillips served the punch. Witches and owls adorned the curtains and walls. Autumn leaves decorated the dining room. About fifty friends were invited. The games consisted of Bowl fortune telling, puzzle games, past, present and future fortune telling and Cheshire cat smile, in which Maud Garrison and Herb Phillips won prizes. Refreshments were then served. It being leap year the girls chose their partners. The guests departed at a late hour having a splendid time and wishing Mr. and Mrs. Collett many more returns of the day.

In the Rosebud reservation drawing recently held at Dallas, South Dakota, a number of Marion men registered. Of that number Marshall Sam Kleinhammer drew claim No. 2991. Mr. Kleinhammer registered at Dallas and while there drove several miles into the reservation and considered any claim under four thousand a good thing. His number is well within that zone. We are glad of his good fortune.

The northeast corner of Third and Main is greatly improved with the completion of the cement walk. Another valuable addition to our cement walks.

W.B. Miesse returned last week from Medford, Okla., where he had been the previous two weeks delivering a carload of apples for the Marion Produce Co. This company furnished two cars of apples for Arkansas points this week. It has made a good market for the farmer. Fifty cents a bushel is being paid. Three or four carloads of choice apples brought sixty cents, but the market remains steady at fifty.

Elections returns were furnished Tuesday night by the Missouri and Kansas Telephone Co. and quite satisfactory. The American Telephone & Telegraph Company has a through line from New York to Hutchinson and through Clyde Harris, manager of the local company, Marion had service direct, equal to that of any large city. No charge was made for this service, as all interested parties are patrons of the local telephone company.

The Aulne school will gave a box social at the schoolhouse Friday evening, Nov. 13. A short program will be given. Proceeds to go toward a library. Everybody invited.
