Restaurant changes hands

Last Tuesday Alva Yost purchased the Palm restaurant, which for several months was successfully run by Roberts & Woyame. For some time Alva has been in the grocery department of W.W. Loveless & Sons, and we wish him success in his business venture.

The name of the restaurant will be changed from The Palm to the Silver Moon Restaurant, and no effort spared to keep up the good reputation of the place.

Necktie Pie Social

Next Wednesday evening, just before Thanksgiving, at Williams’ schoolhouse, will be given a necktie pie social. A cordial invitation is extended to all to attend.

Fire at the Santa Fe Station

Last Monday morning, a small blaze at the Santa Fe station called out the fire department. The boys made a quick run but a bucket brigade extinguished the flames before much damage had been done. A live cinder from the freight engine landed on the shingle roof of the station and in a few minutes would have caused considerable damage. As it was, a few shingles will repair the roof.

Two fine, 8-pound boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Hunt Wednesday, Nov. 18. Mother and children are getting along fine.

Mrs. G.P. Marner and Miss Eulah went to Wichita Thursday evening to see Ben Hur. They were joined at Wichita by Miss Zoe Marner of Newton.

Last Friday evening as Jos. Ondres, who lives 3 miles north of Marion, was caring for his team after dark, one of the horses kicked the lantern over and in the fire that followed, the barn and three horses were burned. One team was saved.

Last Monday evening, Mahlon Crist was holding his horses in the corn field while some game was being shot and was thrown under their feet, receiving injuries in the abdomen that at first were thought to be quite serious, but today he is improving.

Mr. Pierson, who is canvassing the city for Sunny Monday soap, will be in town until Saturday, Nov. 21. Anyone wishing to avail themselves of this special offer should see him before he leaves. He can be seen at W.W. Loveless & Sons’ store any time Saturday.

The south front to the Dean building is being completed this week. Two rows of cement blocks were laid and cornice put on. This will give the building a good appearance from the south. When all the buildings facing on Williams street have been remodeled, the view from the north entrance of the courthouse will be much improved. This work takes time.

Possibly no part of Marion has made the percent of improvement the past year as that part of Third and Fourth streets south. Particularly that adjoining the courthouse property. After the jail was moved to the south side of the courthouse square, the improvements really began. The courthouse yard was graded; this has been exceptionally well done, it had to be in keeping with the broad cement walks and driveways which surround the building. In the past few days, the city of Marion has graded Williams street (the street on the north of the courthouse), connected it with the storm sewer through the catch basin at Third and Fourth street and as soon as the walks on the north side of the street are finished it will have completed a piece of work all Marion county is interested in and on which all who look can pronounce it well done.
