Among the old timers who are to be here and make talks Aug. 11 at the Old Settlers Picnic will be A.C. Pierce of Junction City. He came to Kansas with Colonel Plumb in 1858, “laid out” Salina, and surveyed the first road in Marion County.

S.L. Brose is the owner of a new seven-passenger Studebaker.

Marion got its first glimpse of “soldier boys” since the call to service on the border Monday evening.

A train bearing the 1st Iowa Cavalry from Iowa City stopped here, and the boys marched around town for the sake of exercise. A big bunch of folks gathered at the station to see them and to cheer them on their way.

John Powers, as royal high priest of the Arch Chapter, was present last week at Topeka at the laying of the corner stone of the big new Masonic building and made one of the two principal addresses.

The State Charter Board last week rejected an application for the proposed Home State Bank at Marion. The board gave as a reason for rejecting the application that Marion does not need more banks.

A band concert on the school grounds last week was greatly enjoyed, and we have heard enthusiastic comment concerning it. The music was high-class and was played splendidly.

Josiah Good is owner of a new Hudson Super Six.

W.J. Bryan is to appear as an extra Chautauqua number here this summer. Holders of season tickets are to be admitted without charge.
