Elgin Opening
Another of Marion’s long-cherished desires has been more fully realized than the most enthusiastic and hopeful citizen had dared expect, and the city now “points with pride” to one of the handsomest, coziest, best equipped and best kept hotels in Kansas—the Elgin.
This splendid hostelry was formally opened to the public last Wednesday evening, at which time its charming parlors, its capacious halls and its extensive verandas presented a scene of social splendor never equaled in Marion.
Frank Whitney has been “down” with malarial fever for some days. Not a very violent attack we are glad to learn.
The Florence baseball club went to Marion this morning to show the Marion people how to play a good game of ball.—Florence News. And they went back at night to tell the Florence people that when the rain came to their relief the score stood nine to five in favor of Marion.
State Treasurer Howe, ex-Superintendent Speer and Col. Goss, of Topeka, came in Tuesday to fish awhile, and attend the Elgin opening.
The Mystic Driving Club is making big preparations for the races at this place beginning on the 28th. The track, which horsemen say is one of the best half-mile courses in the State, has been placed in excellent condition and everything arranged for a big time. This association is not only included in the Golden Belt Trotting Association of Kansas, but is also attached to the National Association whose rules govern its races. A great many fine horses will be here and the premiums which aggregate about $1,500 will be paid in cash, in full.
