Marion’s Great Sensation

Marion was shocked last Friday, about noon, when the startling fact was announced that Mr. R. Calhoun, a well-known business man, had been arrested charged with the commission of a series of the gravest and grossest of crimes. The offenses charged were so revolting in their nature that every one instinctively doubted their truth, but the evidence of his guilt developed rapidly, and before night, there was scarcely a thread of doubt left.

That any man could commit such crimes seems incredible, but that one occupying his position in society should be such a scoundrel is astounding. Truly,
“Truth is stranger than fiction.”

The daily Wichita Eagle continues to soar. It is evident that Marsh Murdock knew his field better than most Kansas journalists, for few of them expected his daily to last so long especially in “these hard times.”

Blue grass is beginning to show up and bluebirds, sure harbingers of Spring, have put in an appearance.

Mr. Mickey of Iowa, whose recent visit to this county we have referred to elsewhere, says in his letter that the best apples he ever tasted he ate here. Kansas apples are certainly about the best- flavored fruit of the kind in the world. Mr. W.H. Billings of Marion, who owns probably the oldest and most prolific orchard in the county, visited New York last Fall and, while there, shipped home a carload of apples embracing varieties nearly all of which, and we believe all, he raises here, and they would bear no comparison to their Marion namesakes in taste.

Jex & Town have received the finest line of marble ever brought to this county. Those contemplating the purchase of a tombstone or other work in marble should not fail to call and examine their stock.
