Two young men from the country, whose names we purposely withhold, were tried and convicted in Marion last week of an offense too common among thoughtless, careless young fellows. An elderly Russian gentleman with his family were returning from church in a wagon, a few Sundays ago, when these two young men, with another not get apprehended, came dashing by on horseback, causing the team to frighten and run away, resulting in breaking the old lady’s arm, badly bruising the old gentleman, killing one of the horses, and doing other harm. The young men were probably actuated more by mischievousness than meanness, but that doesn’t repair the damage, and the fact that they got off with a light fine will not, we trust, lessen the wholesome effect of the lesson to them and others.

A blast of winter swooped down upon us last Saturday and maintained its icy grip for several days.

Nine violators of the prohibitory law, representing, however, we believe, only three principals, were brought up from Florence Monday and arraigned before Squire Thompson. They plead guilty on one count each, enlarged the school fund to the amount of nine hundred dollars, deposited, also, two hundred and seventy-one dollars to defray the expenses of the matinee, and gave bond not to monkey with the law any more. We trust the lesson will have a salutary effect upon the “boys” immediately concerned, and upon the community they represent.

The Skating Rink is about finished and was occupied for the first time yesterday by the Presbyterian ladies with their Thanksgiving dinner and supper The building is 50x100 feet in dimensions, compactly built, conveniently fitted, and will be opened for fun, it is thought, in a few days. George F. Roberts, proprietor. Folsom & Thomas had the contract and did a good job, as usual.
