Wichita is the third city in Kansas in point of population. Topeka second and Leavenworth first. Marion, however, will begin to reach for them in a short time.
L.M. Knowles, of Peabody, is now a full-fledged lawyer, having been admitted to the District court bar at the last term of court. Hereafter he will heist his brogans onto the courtroom table and spit on the floor, and look wise at the Judge, and badger the witnesses, and taffy the “intelligent jury” just like an old hand at the business.
Winter is upon us. However, don’t worry. It will be warm enough next summer.
School Entertainment
On Friday evening, at the Opera House, the High school and Scientific department will give a Literary contest. The object of this entertainment is to awaken a more general interest in literary work by giving the patrons of the city schools some idea of what our Literary societies are doing.
The proceeds of the evening will be devoted to the purchase of philosophical apparatus for the school.
General admission is 10 cents. Reserved seats, 20 cents. Tickets will be on sale at the Opera House Drug store on and after the 16th.
Mr. Huston has been delayed in the re-opening of his photographic studio, but will be ready for business tomorrow.
The coal dealing fraternity has been reinforced by the entrance of W.B. Dobbs into this field of business.
An Irish National League has been organized at Cottonwood Falls. W.A. O’Morgan of the Leader, Lawyer Paddy Cochran, and other eminent Irishmen seem to be at the head of the movement.
Playful Zephyrs
We need scarcely say to our home readers that that was a lively wind that struck this region last Friday. It came from the southwest accompanied by clouds and blew a gale, almost a hurricane, nearly all day. We have seen nothing like it, except that memorable April Sunday, some years ago. The dust was hardly so dense on this last occasion, as then, but we think the force of the wind was greater.
