The last Street Commissioner hauled over 100 loads of loose stones off of Main Street. The present Commissioner is hauling about that many loads of the same kind of stone onto the street. We do not express here an opinion as to the relative wisdom of these two opposite plans of “improvement,” but it looks very much as if one or the other was a waste of effort and money. It is a pity we can’t adopt some well-matured and wise plan of street improvements, and work to it.

Last Friday the pupils of District. No. 45 and the citizens of Fairplay gathered at the grove of J.K. Williams to witness the closing exercises of the school taught by M.L. Wheeler. This was the fifth annual picnic at the same place.

The newest firm in the city is that of Clark & Mason, real estate and loan brokers.

The Children’s Day services and picnic at Antelope tomorrow, Saturday, promise to be very interesting. The Rock Island trains will stop there both morning and evening affording special accommodations for Marionites to go and enjoy a day with their country friends. Only 20 cents for adults and 15 cents for children for round trip tickets to the picnic.

We hear W.H. Carpenter’s management of the Morgan murder trial highly commended. They say he is exhibiting a great deal of skill and ability, which gives promise of prominence as a criminal lawyer.
