Everyone who knows that worthy old soldier and citizen, Allen Shunk, will be glad to learn that he has ben awarded a pension of $30 per month. It is not as much as he deserves in his affliction, but it will help materially in the support of his excellent family.

The Alumni banquet in the Y.M.C.A. building last Monday evening was in many respects one of the most enjoyable social gatherings ever held in Marion. There were nearly 150 persons present. Of the many pleasurable features of the affair, we cannot now speak to do them justice.

The Peabody High School Cornet Band did an excellent thing for Marion and the Marion High School on the Commencement occasion last Friday evening. They came over and discoursed delightful music in honor of the event.

A mean swindle was perpetrated on Mrs. Hutchins, keeper of the Square Hotel, by a transient guest last week. The fellow presented to the lady what appeared to be a five-dollar bill and was given four dollars in change. The bill proved to be a one-dollar bill with the number five evidently cut out of a cigar label and pasted over the figure one as to look quite genuine. Most anyone might have cashed the bill without detecting the fraud. The fellow skipped as soon as he got the change.
