Three seniors tied for honors as valedictorian of the Class of 1986, achieving perfect 4.0 averages during four years at Marion High School. The co-valedictorians are Lynette Lalouette, Debbie Socolofsky, and Chantal Nienstedt. Karen Genandt, with a 3.94 average, was salutatorian. The outstanding Senior Girl award went to Genandt and the Outstanding Senior Boy award went to Craig Brock.

Workers need a week of good weather in order to finish work on the new U.S. 56 bridge over the Cottonwood River. The new bridge will replace the hazardous narrow “single-lane” trestle which was built in the 1920s. The old bridge will be torn down and removed once the new one is open.

A new performing arts award as handed out Thursday during the Marion High School awards concert. The Class of 1964 recently funded the award in memory of Chris Hauser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold M. Hauser of Marion. The award went to senior Craig Brock, who also received the John Philip Sousa band award, Outstanding Vocal Musician award, and Artist of the Year award.

Doug Regnier and Jami Shirley have been hired as directors of the Marion Community Athletic Association’s recreation program for the summer.

Marion County Hospital District’s medical clinic at Florence will be closed temporarily, due to a shortage of physicians following the recent resignation of Dr. Jeffery Martin. The district’s clinic at Lincolnville, meanwhile, will be kept open, but staffed according to a new schedule.
