Contractors began breaking down the old narrow bridge over the Cottonwood River west of Marion on Thursday. By Friday afternoon, a large crane completed the operation and the large trestle lay broken on the riverbanks. Constructed in the 1920s, the concrete bridge had become a local landmark.

The Kansas Army National Guard will conduct an equipment display Sunday and Monday on the city parking lot north of the Marion police office.

Eastmoor United Methodist Church was the setting June 7 for the wedding of Cheryl Lynn Stoltenberg and Jay William Christensen.

LeRoy Hoffman of Marion grew some bragging-size potatoes in his home garden this year. His grandchildren, Laura and Pat Cupps of Bella Vista, Ark., are pictured with six cobbler potatoes that weighed a total of 4.75 pounds.

Burglars broke into three Marion businesses sometime during the night of June 24, stealing cash and valuables. The thieves robbed the Kerr-McGee Service Station, the Marion Veterinary Clinic, and Van’s Too and Van’s Man.

Sara Mills of Florence was in the first class to complete the Future Astronaut Training Program, receiving her diploma and graduating Friday at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Discovery Center in Hutchinson.

Local gardeners are reporting good crops this year, thanks to the plentiful supply of rain and sunshine.
