The budget currently proposed by the Marion City Commission for 1987 calls for a lowering of the mill levy. Larry Loomis, commissioner of finance, said the reason for the lesser levy was due to the fact that every fund is in the black and has a good cash balance. “We’ll use this balance to offset expenses next year,” he added.

A Japanese historian, Ryo Yokoyama, was in Marion Thursday doing research on Sir William Scully and his tenant farmers.

Ground was broken Thursday on September, a 20-unit moderate-income housing complex in Marion. The project is being constructed on Main Street west of the Stadium Road intersection.

April Ogden, a recent graduate of Marion High School, is scheduled to play in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association all-star game Aug. 8 at Washburn University Gymnasium in Topeka.

The Marion County American Legion baseball team defeated Chapman 19-2 Monday in their first game of the AA district tournament. Mike Kelsey was the winning pitcher. He allowed only four hits, struck out seven, and walked only one.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kristek of Lincolnville announce the engagement of their daughter, Jodi, to DuWayne Suffield. A Sept. 20 wedding is planned.
