The school bell at the old turn-of-the-century Lost Springs school will be getting a new home. According to Superintendent Jerry Will, it will be hung in an arch to be built near the school with a sign proclaiming Centre Elementary School.

Julie Hett Nelson, a Marion native and professional entertainer, will sing during a free concert at the “Art in the Park’ annual festival Saturday in Central Park. An estimated 70 artists and craftsmen are scheduled to display their works during the show and sale.

Joyce Smith of Marion was medalist at the invitational golf tournament held Aug. 19 at the Herington Country Club.

Two youngsters received novels as rewards for reading the most books during the summer reading program at Marion City Library. Eric Byer, 8, read 264 books and Jennifer Blount, 12, read 63.

Three Vietnamese men each paid $500 fines in Marion County District Court after pleading guilty to illegally netting game fish at Marion Reservoir.

Gary Melcher of El Dorado has been named 5A boys track coach of the year by the Kansas Track Coaches Association. He is the son of Dorothy Melcher of Marion and the late Wilbur Melcher.
