A crowd estimated at more than 9,000 watched the hour-long 75th annual Old Settlers’ Day parade Saturday, which according to many spectators was the best in years. A total of 77 entries, including nine bands, lined up in Jex Addition and marched along Main Street on the fine autumn morning.

Centre High School will crown a homecoming king and queen Friday prior to the Herington football game. Candidates are Candy Plett, Lisa Stika, Michele Broce, Gina Riffel, Chris Bina, James McDonald, Raymond Kristek, and Mike Stika.

Winners of the Marion County Lake Run on Saturday were Teresa Buchanan, women’s two-mile; Cheryl Wiens, women’s’ 10K, Mike Bina, men’s two-mile; and Evan Yoder, men’s 10K.

Marion High School Class of 1931 held its 55th anniversary reunion on Old Settlers’ Day. Members present included LuVena Hatterman, Helen Frazier Hosmer, Bernice Baxter Jewett, Velma Byram Reh, Evelyn Olsen Ollenberger, Gib McCullough, Vera Stiller Heidebrecht, Henrietta Conyers Richmond, Lee Beaston, A.R. “Pete” Schambron, Homer Hett, Harold Bowers, and Simon Weidenbenner. Also present was one of their teachers, Maude Thompson.

Elora Robinson has accepted chairmanship of this year’s Girl Scout community fund drive that begins Wednesday.
