A group representing the Downtown Beautification Committee of the Marion Chamber of Commerce called on the city commission Monday afternoon in an effort to save the town’s brick streets.

Bud McLinden organized a trail ride Sunday afternoon that kept about 40 horses and between 55 and 60 people busy during the Cottonwood Valley Saddle Horse Association spring Membership Drive and Trail Ride.

Phil Hanes, an eighth-grader at Florence Elementary School, made statewide news Saturday by winning the 1985 Kansas Spelling Bee. Hanes, who represented Marion County, will go on to represent the State of Kansas at the national spelling bee June 3-7 in Washington, D.C.

Several hundred cattlemen and ranchers from about six states gathered at the Donahue Hayhook Ranch eight miles east of Antelope Saturday afternoon for the third annual Brangus Production Sale. Donahue ranches specialize in the breeding and sale of Brangus cattle, a cross between Brahman and Angus.

The Pilsen community will celebrate the 100th founding of its parish in 1988 and area residents are asked to preserve any pictures, records, family histories, etc. for the occasion.
