Fishermen from around the state will compete June 9 for $1,000 in cash prizes to be given away at the 14th annual Marion Lake Open fishing derby.

A two-foot-tall dimensional wheat sculpture was one of the most attractive centerpieces and a coveted door prize awarded at the Governor’s Tourism Conference in Wichita last week. Crafted by Ern Hett at his Copper Shed, it was donated through the Marion Chamber of Commerce tourism committee to represent the community.

Jay Sandwell was named winner of the annual John Philip Sousa Award. The award honors the student who contributes the most enthusiasm and leadership of the band. Sandwell was leader of the percussion section.

Graduating Marion High School seniors Chris Webb and Leann Snelling were named outstanding senior male and female athletes of the year. Their parents are Jack Webb and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Snelling.

Ambassadors Rosse Case and Bud Hannaford recently presented Charles Kannady and Eloise Mueller with a “First Dollar of Profit” certificate on behalf of Marion Chamber of Commerce. The business, Kannady and Associates Real Estate, has moved into the former Slusser Drilling office at 407 E. Main.
