City commissioners were disappointed this week when Marion wasn’t successful in getting a half-million dollar federal grant to establish an industrial park. But they weren’t defeated. They plan to apply again in September.

Marion Manor nursing home will again sponsor the community fireworks display on July 4, Independence Day. Bennie Holtsclaw, well-known country-gospel singer and musician, will provide entertainment. Also on the program will be patriotic readings and group singing.

Beth Ann Snelling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Snelling of rural Marion, will be a candidate competing for the title Miss Teen of Kansas June 28 and 29 at Salina.

Marion may be on television Monday evening. Several months ago, a film crew was in town shooting scenes for the movie “Hambone and Hillie.” It will be shown on HBO at 7 p.m. Monday. The PG-rated movie is about a mutt dog that travels from New York to California in search of his owner. It is a family drama starring Lillian Gish and O.J. Simpson.

Paul Wilson, administrator at St. Luke Hospital, recently presented checks to nursing students Brenda Berg of Marion and Brenda Riggs of Burns as partial payment toward their Frederick R. Knautz Memorial Scholarships. The scholarships total $1,000 each and are sponsored by Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society of America.
